On Friday, Jennifer Aniston posted an Instagram story showing off a Christmas ornament with the message "Our first pandemic 2020" engraved on it.

The Friends actress did not caption the post, and it is unclear whether the decoration was hers or not. However, her followers appear to have assumed it’s hers, and this has sparked controversy.

The ornament is a custom-made design by Etsy shop Rustic Raleigh, owned by Brittany Sutton, and sells for $5.

Aniston's post sparked mixed reactions, with some Twitter users slamming her for sharing a message that seems to overlook the innumerable losses and unprecedented challenges that have been brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.

Some connected the post with other times celebrities posted insensitive coronavirus-related comments on social media.

"All celebrities have done during this pandemic is show how out of touch and just f---ing oblivious they are to anything that doesn't have to do with them. Some people's entire family have died, but at least Aniston is showing how quirky she can be," one person wrote.

Others defended Aniston and the post, referring to her previous Instagram posts where she expressed empathy towards the victims of COVID-19 and urged the public to wear face masks and adhere to public health guidelines.

Some of the users defending Aniston stated that the decoration may have been meant as a joke, or that the star had no bad intentions. Some even noted that Aniston was not the only one with a decoration expressing similar sentiment.

"Jennifer Aniston isn't even the first person I've seen with an ornament like that this year... one of my friend's made one that said 'baby's first pandemic,'" one person commented.

Aniston has yet to respond to the criticisms.
