Free News Reader Chrome Extension — Privacy Policy
Effective Date: March 6, 2026
Free News Reader is a Chrome extension built by AmericaNow.com. We take your privacy seriously. This policy explains what data the extension accesses, how it is used, and what we do not do.
What the Extension Reads
When you visit a supported news website, the extension reads only the following publicly visible metadata from the current page:
- Page title and headline (the title tag and og:title meta tag)
- Page description (the meta description and og:description tags)
- Author name (if available in meta tags)
- A brief preview of visible text on the page
- The page URL
This is the same information that is publicly visible to any visitor, search engine, or social media platform. The extension does not access any content behind a paywall.
How That Data Is Used
The metadata listed above is sent to our server (americanow.com) via an encrypted HTTPS connection. Our server uses this metadata to generate an AI-powered context summary about the news topic. The summary is then displayed to you on americanow.com.
Generated summaries are saved as posts on americanow.com so that if another user encounters the same article, the cached summary loads instantly instead of making a new API call.
What We Do NOT Do
- We do NOT bypass, crack, or circumvent any paywall
- We do NOT read or access any paywalled content
- We do NOT collect personal information (no names, emails, accounts, or login data)
- We do NOT track your browsing history or browsing behavior
- We do NOT use cookies or any tracking technology in the extension
- We do NOT sell, share, or transfer any data to third parties
- We do NOT run analytics or advertising in the extension
Third-Party Services
Our server uses the Grok AI API (by xAI) to generate summaries and images. The article metadata (headline, description) is sent to the Grok API for this purpose. No personal or identifying user information is sent to xAI. Their privacy policy is available at x.ai/legal/privacy-policy.
Data Retention
Generated summaries are stored as published posts on americanow.com indefinitely for caching purposes. No user-specific data is stored. The extension itself stores no data locally on your device.
Permissions
The extension requests the following Chrome permissions:
- activeTab — To read metadata from the current page when you click the extension icon
- scripting — To inject the notification bar on supported news sites
- Host permissions for americanow.com — To send metadata to our server and receive the generated summary
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated effective date.
