AC/DC Producer George Young Dies At 70
By Brendan Kelly October 24, 2017 Musician and producer George Young has died at the age of 70.
George Young, best known for producing AC/DC, which featured his brothers Angus and Malcolm Young, also played in the well-known Australian rock band The Easybeats in the 1960’s.
Young played rhythm guitar in The Easybeats and co-wrote the majority of the band’s songs, including their hit single, “Friday On My Mind,” according to Consequence of Sound.
After The Easybeats disbanded in 1970, Young launched his own production company. Several years later, he began working with his brothers as they started their new band, AC/DC.
Young played bass guitar on AC/DC’s early records, including “High Voltage,” “T.N.T.,” “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap,” “Let There Be Rock,” and “Powerage.”
AC/DC released a statement on their Facebook page announcing that Young had passed away.
“It is with pain in our heart that we have to announce the passing of our beloved brother and mentor George Young,” the band’s statement reads. “Without his help and guidance there would not have been an AC/DC. As a musician, songwriter, producer, advisor and much, much more, you could not ask for a more dedicated and professional man. As a brother, you could not ask for a finer brother. For all he did and gave to us throughout his life, we will always remember him with gratitude and hold him close to our hearts.”
It has not yet been revealed what caused Young’s death.
AC/DC fans shared their thoughts on the news of the legendary musician and producer’s passing on the band’s Facebook page.
“How much does Australian music owe George Young?” One fan commented. “Not just for AC/DC but the Easybeats, Vanda and Young and so much more. If he’s not in the ARIA Hall of Fame he should be. RIP George you were one of the great ones.”
“OMG ABSOLUTELY SHATTERED,” another user wrote. “We would like to thank the Youngs and Bon Scott & fellow band members (Brian Johnson) for giving the world the BEST ROCK N ROLL BAND EVER created. R.I.P. George and we hope that Bon welcomed u with open arms xxxxx”
“R.I.P George , you were the catalyst for there even being an AC/DC along with Malcolm and Angus and Bon and the many drummers of ac/dc which eventually led to Phil Rudd,” another fan added. “In the words of Bon Scott : to you George – Im gonna Ride On Ride On Ride On , Ride On towards that great rock and roll heaven George Young you will be truly missed. R.I.P.”
