The Monterey County Unified School District is in hot water after a resident noticed the American flag at Prunedale Elementary flying upside down. The resident expressed their anger on social media, calling on other residents to call the school and demand an explanation.
The post read:
Prunedale Elementary school is flying their flag upside down! I tried talking to administration there, but they all were in a staff meeting!!!! Then I called the Department of Education in Salinas and they were all in a staff meeting as well. After that, I called the North Monterey County school district. And believe it or not, they were also in a staff meeting!!! This is wrong on every level! They are all cowering & hiding! I left a message for both, the superintendent & Human Resources. I reminded them that they are influencing, innocent children! I asked why the flag hasn’t been upside down for the last four years, when public schools were encouraging, gender, dysphoria, and gender, mutation, in our children! I encourage everybody to call and give them a piece of your mind…
They need to be accountable for their actions!
Following the post, netizens flooded the Monterey County Unified School District’s social media pages to ask for an explanation. Many were convinced that the flag was flown upside down as a protest against President-elect Trump’s win, considering this had never happened before.
When the social media post was shared on X (formerly Twitter), netizens expressed rage, reaching out to the school district until the account was deleted. Following the deletion of the school district’s X account, one user commented: “They deleted their account because they’re a bunch of traitors and most of America is now pissed at them!”
Other users expressed their anger at the upside-down flag, with one person writing: “Whoever did it needs to be fired immediately. This 💩 stops when we stop it.”
Another person commented: “An embarrassment to all that have fought and died for the ability to call yourself an American. What an egotistical egregious thing to do. Grow up and behave like adults.”
Following the backlash, the Monterey County Unified School District Superintendent released a statement, saying in part:
We are reaching out regarding an incident that took place earlier today at Prunedale Elementary School involving the display of the American flag. During the morning setup, a substitute custodial staff member accidentally hung the American flag incorrectly. This was brought to our attention by a community member, and we want to assure you that this was a genuine mistake that does not reflect any intended message or disrespect. We as a school district do not condone the improper orientation of the flag.
Once we were made aware, school staff promptly adjusted the flag to its correct position. We deeply value and respect the symbol of the American flag and its significance in representing our country’s ideals and freedoms. Ensuring proper handling of the flag is a priority in our district, and we take incidents like this very seriously.
Despite the statement, no further information has been released by the school’s administrators or the school district regarding actions taken against the person who committed the egregious act.
Prunedale Elementary School and Monterey County Unified School District have yet to respond
to requests for comment regarding the matter.
