Ind. Conservative Candidate McMullin: Trump Is A Bigot
Independent presidential candidate Evan McMullin called Republican nominee Donald Trump a “bigot” and blasted him for his interactions with Russian President Vladimir Putin. “Let’s be honest with ourselves, let’s call a spade a spade,” he said on an August 12 episode of “MSNBC Live with Thomas Roberts.”
“We know Donald Trump is a bigot. He’s not fit to be our president. He’s a terrible opponent for Hillary Clinton. And we can do better on all counts, which is what I hope to offer.” McMullin, a long term Republican and CIA veteran who entered the presidential race in August largely to provide a conservative alternative to Trump, said that Trump “is doing the work of Putin for him” in the U.S.
“Let’s put aside these games o trying to listen to Trump to try and figure out what Trump is about,” added McMullin, who is currently working to get on as many state ballots as possible despite approaching and missing several state deadlines to do so. “We know Donald Trump has a relationship with Vladimir Putin. We know that Donald Trump has zero experience fighting terrorism and doesn’t know the first thing about it.” According to McMullin, Trump’s policies and sometimes controversial words about minorities are “undermining” American principles.
“We’re a country where people of all religions are welcome,” he continued. “People of all faiths, people of all ethnicities, all nationalities. We’re a diverse, pluralistic country and we cherish this…To think that he would be the president of our great country is absolutely unconscionable. We absolutely can’t let that happen.” McMullin, who is running primarily because he does not believe Trump should be president, has had harsh words for the candidate in the past, particularly in regards to Trump’s approach to fighting terrorism.
“What [Trump] doesn’t realize is that we actually depend on Muslims to do counterterrorism, to wage war against terrorists,” McMullin told ABC News on August 11. By proposing a nationwide ban on Muslims and other means to target the demographic, McMullin said that Trump “decreases their willingness to work with us, with other Muslims, and that impedes our ability to destroy ISIS.” McMullin also said that both Trump and Clinton “offer old ideas” and that “Americans are hungry for something new, some new approach” that he promised to deliver.
