Poll: Democratic Party Identification At Two-Year High
June 7, 2017 by Sloan Toth
A new poll revealed that Democratic Party affiliation is the highest in more than two years, brightening the political party’s chances for the 2018 elections.
The Gallup survey, taken from May 1-31, found 45 percent of respondents identified as Democrats or as independents who lean Democratic, while 38 percent of respondents identified as Republicans or independents who lean Republican.
Gallup reported that the growing disparity in party identification is primarily due to a decrease in Republican identification rather than an increase in Democratic identification.
Party affiliation is a strong indicator of voting behavior, and the current Democratic advantage equates to that of the 1998 and 2006 elections, two of the most successful midterm elections for the party.
Maryland Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Matthews says Democrats in her state have begun to mobilize early to capitalize on the 2018 elections, according to The Baltimore Sun.
“The Democrats have learned their lesson from 2014,” said Matthews. “The Democratic Party was taking its registration advantage for granted and, to be honest, allowed its party apparatus to atrophy.”
Since President Donald Trump took office, Democratic mobilization has been accompanied by widespread protests such as the Women’s March and protests against Trump’s travel ban.
Dirk Haire, chair of the Maryland Republican Party, explained that Democrats’ vehement strategies were already a well-worn path for the GOP.
“As we’ve learned on the Republican side of aisle, anger is not a strategy,” Haire said. “It’s never worked for Republicans. I don’t see why it would work for Democrats.”
“We’re going about our business in a smart and strategic way,” Haire said. “We’ll leave the screaming to the Democrats.”
Despite Haire’s insistence that the GOP is avoiding hostility, many members of the party, including Trump, have begun to strategically target the press, according to McClatchy DC Bureau.
“You look at how the press is perceived in any kind of opinion survey at the moment, and the press is right down there with Donald Trump,” Tobe Berkovitz, a Boston University advertising expert and congressional adviser.
“The press is held with disgust and contempt. Battling the press isn’t a bad strategy.” Barney Keller, a GOP strategist, explained that the campaign against media now represents solidarity with the party and the current administration. “I don’t think that issues like media bias are going to be the prime motivator for Republicans,” said Keller. “But, combined with other things, that can be part of a theme of standing with the president — reminding those people who voted for him the first time that they should continue to vote for Republicans.”
