Obama, Richard Branson ‘Bromance’ Fuels Speculation (Photos)

February 9, 2017 by Sean Kelly

Former President Barack Obama was pictured having the time of his life with British billionaire Richard Branson, fueling speculation the two are working together on Obama’s new foundation.

Photos showed the two playfully fighting for cameras, as well as kitesurfing and engaging in other watersports and activities. Obama and former first lady Michelle joined Branson on his private island almost immediately after leaving Washington, D.C., after they attended the inauguration of President Donald Trump.

“It was a huge honour to be able to invite President Barack and Michelle Obama down to the British Virgin Islands for a complete break after Barack finished his second term as President and the family left the White House,” Branson said in a blog post on his website.

Obama had reportedly been surfing in Hawaii before assuming office in 2009 when his head of security told him it’d be the “last time” he would surf for “eight years.”

“So it was tremendous to offer him the chance to learn to kitesurf. The sport has really taken off in the past decade and we have the perfect conditions and team to help anyone learn. I have also wanted to learn foilboard surfing. So we decided to set up a friendly challenge: could Barack learn to kitesurf before I learned to foilboard? We agreed to have a final day battle to see who could stay up the longest,” Branson wrote.

Although it appears the trip was simply a relaxing post-presidency vacation for the Obamas, many have speculated that Branson might be involved somehow in the former president’s newly announced foundation. A business partnership has not been confirmed.

“The only way the Obama Foundation will be as successful as the Clinton Foundation and make the Obamas rich is if they have the same commodity the Clintons had, influence,” one Newsiosity reader said of Obama’s foundation on the site’s Facebook page. “This means that Obama will not only stay engaged, he will seek to put himself in a position to have influence to offer donors.”
