Footage Of Clam Eating Salt Goes Viral (Video)

AmericaNow Staff  ·  December 20, 2016

When you think of a clam, there’s a good chance you don’t think about how it moves or eats. Many people only think of clams in a closed shell. A video (below) showing the way clams really move and eat is going viral.

A man set a live clam on his kitchen table, covered the table in salt, and filmed to see what would happen.

Because many people are unaware of what a clam in motion looks like, the video quickly spread online after it piqued the curiosity of millions.

The video above shows a clam “eating” salt from the table, and it likely looks a bit different from how you’d expect. The clam’s “tongue” emerges from the shell and licks up the salt.

Miriam Goldstein, a biologist from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, has an interesting explanation of what’s happening in the video, according to Newsiosity. She says it isn’t actually a tongue that emerges from the clam’s shell, and that the clam is likely trying to understand and adapt to its environment.

“It’s probably trying to place a dig,” Goldstein explained. “I doubt the salt has anything to do with it.”

As you can see, the clam was not able to dig into the table, but the results are still fascinating.

Viewers on YouTube shared their own thoughts and reactions in the comments section of the video.

“That’s its foot and that’s how it digs to hide the it’s scared, that’s the clam trying to escape so it doesn’t die,” one user wrote.

“One question though,” another user commented. “WTF WAS THAT. CLAMS CAN MOVE? THIS IS NEW TO ME.”
