Texas Woman Denied Service For Pro-Police T-Shirt
A Texas woman says that a cashier at her local Kroger grocery store refused to ring her up because she was wearing a shirt that read “Police Lives Matter.”
A woman named Meredith, who requested her last name not be released, told KTRK that she was at her local Kroger in Spring, Texas, when a teenaged cashier denied her service because of the shirt she was wearing.
“She made me feel ashamed to have the shirt on and I don’t appreciate that,” Meredith told the news station.
According to Meredith, the cashier walked away from her register after refusing to ring her up and went to talk to a coworker. Meredith overheard the conversation.
“She was stating that the shirt I had on was basically a slap in the face to her and she was doing everything she could not to cry,” Meredith said.
Meredith says that her husband is a police officer and that she did not intend to offend anybody by wearing the shirt. She says she has complained to the store about the incident several times, but that she has yet to receive a response.
Meredith told KTRK that she does not want the cashier who denied her service to be fired, but that she simply wants everybody to be able to freely express themselves.
“It’s important that people in the service industry know that no matter what, if someone walked in with a Black Lives Matter shirt on they needed to still be serviced,” Meredith said.
Meredith shared her story with local news, as well as with others, such as Kimberly Colley, executive director of the Blue Bow Foundation. The Blue Bow Foundation is an organization that seeks to support police officers and their families. Colley, whose husband is also a police officer, says that she was shocked by Kroger’s lack of response on the incident.
“Our husbands risk their lives every single time they put on those uniforms, they’re walking targets and this is the least we can do to show there is support out there,” Colley told KMOV, according to Mad World News.
