Vietnam Mother Gives Birth To Twins With Different Dads
A father became suspicious when he noticed that his fraternal twins looked very different from one another. He requested a DNA test and what he learned from the results shocked him.
According to CNN, scientists in Vietnam have confirmed a case of bi-paternal twins – twins who each have a different father.
A Vietnamese father noticed that his twin babies looked very different from each other so he, with the help of some family members who were suspicious as well, put pressure on his wife to bring the children to the Center for Genetic Analysis and Technologies in Hanoi to have the babies’ DNA tested.
Some family members thought that perhaps there had been a mix-up in the hospital, but the testing revealed something much more unlikely – the twins had the same mother, but different fathers.
According to LittleThings, bi-paternal twins can occur if a woman has intercourse with more than one man during one ovulation period. In this case, and in a few other rare cases, two different eggs were fertilized by two different men during the same ovulation period.
“Our Centre for Genetic Analysis and Technology lab has tested and found a pair of bi-paternal twins,” said Dr. Le Dinh Luong. “This is rare not only for Vietnam, but for the world.”
The doctor says that the family was shocked by the test results and that they were trying to work out the best solution for the problem, but added that due to a confidentiality agreement, he could not go into further detail into the case.
Luong says that bi-paternal twins are incredibly rare and that this is the first case in Vietnam that he is aware of.
According to CNN, a case of bi-paternal twins was reported in the Untied States in 2015 after a court ordered that a New Jersey man only had to pay child support for one of two twins. Testing revealed that the man was only the biological father of one girl in the set of twins.
Readers shared their thoughts on the story on the Shared Facebook page.
“Men have this happen all time and are called every name in the book. If you are the father what do you do? What are your legal rights? This is a bad thing a man has to go through to look at your child and wonder if it’s yours,” one user commented.
“It happens more frequently than people believe,” another user wrote. “Just not always brought to light, much less publicized.”
