Passerby Hooks Rope On National Guard Truck, Onlookers Shocked By What’s On The Other End
A Cadillac Escalade saved a National Guard vehicle from floodwaters during rescue efforts in Houston, Texas, that followed Hurricane Harvey (video below).
In a video of the incident, which was first shared by Twitter user Michael Keyes, the Escalade can be seen revving up while a National Guard vehicle is submerged under water and attached to the truck by a rope.
The Escalade, which is fitted with large wheels, starts to drive and proceeds to pull the vehicle up from under the water. The vehicle becomes stuck as it reaches the grass, but is ultimately able to be pulled the rest of the way onto land. People can be heard cheering as the rescue is completed.
“Heroes saving heroes. What’s not to love? Thanks to all of you lending a helping hand!” one Twitter user commented on Keyes’ post.
“Red, White & Blue! The only Colors we are seeing in Tx! Thank you all!” another Mad World News reader commented on the site’s Facebook page.
“Gotta love them rednecks,” another added, referring to the “Redneck Army” that was said to have been behind the towing.
Meanwhile, Houston continues to struggle following the devastating Hurricane that claimed the lives of some citizens, including a police department veteran named Sgt. Steve Perez. 60-year-old Perez died while driving through floodwaters during the storm.
“The death of Sergeant Perez reminds us of the dangers that police officers willingly face every day in order to serve this great city. We will go through this extremely difficult and trying time with heavy hearts sadly reminded of the ultimate sacrifice one of our own paid,” the police department wrote in a statement, USA Today reported.
“Like Steve, we will not waiver and we will not stop until we meet the immediate safety and security needs of the community Steve and his HPD family love to serve.”
Perez reportedly left his home around 4 a.m. during heavy rain, and was unable to find a path toward his command post. He informed the department that he could not get to his post, and attempted to get as close as possible but became caught in floodwaters under an overpass.
Commanders reportedly tried to get in contact with Perez after noticing that he was not present during roll call. They then called his wife, who said she hadn’t seen him since the previous day. The day after his disappearance, his body was found in 16 feet of water.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and colleagues of fallen Houston Police Sgt. Steve Perez,” the Secret Service wrote in a tweet following news of Perez’s death.
