Doctor Arrested For Disturbing Procedure On Young Girls

An emergency room doctor was arrested and charged after performing genital mutilation on young girls.

Jumana Nagarwala, a doctor at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, was arrested and charged after being accused of performing the horrific act on young girls. Nagarwala reportedly performed the illegal procedure on girls between the ages of 6 and 8 years old at a clinic in Livonia, Michigan. 

WXYZ reported that some of the girls were brought in from out of state for the procedure, which is considered to be human rights violation across the globe.

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is the practice of removing all or part of the clitoris. The idea behind the procedure, which many believe is religious and cultural in some places, is to suppress sexual pleasure.

In one case of FGM performed by 44-year-old Nagarwala, a 7-year-old Minnesota girl was brought to the doctor by her family, who told her it was a “special girls trip.” It was confirmed by a doctor after the procedure that she did, in fact, have her genitals removed. Nagarwala was later identified by the girl during an investigation as the person who performed the procedure, a criminal affidavit stated.

“Female genital mutilation constitutes a particularly brutal form of violence against women and girls. It is also a serious federal felony in the United States. The practice has no place in modern society and those who perform FGM on minors will be held accountable under federal law,” Acting United States Attorney Daniel Lemisch told WXYZ.

“The allegations detailed in today’s criminal complaint are disturbing. The FBI, along with its law enforcement partners, are committed to doing whatever necessary to bring an end to this barbaric practice and to ensure no additional children fall victim to this procedure,” Special Agent In Charge David Gelios added. 

Henry Ford Hospital issued a statement to WXYZ, stressing that they were not at all involved in the practice.

“The alleged criminal activity did not occur at any Henry Ford facility. We would never support or condone anything related to this practice. The doctor has immediately been placed on administrative leave,” the statement read.

Many readers expressed their outrage over the crime and called for Nagarwala to be punished.

“Strip her medical license and deport her. This doctor will continue to perform this atrocity under the table if she is allowed to stay in this country,” one Mad World News reader commented on the site’s Facebook page.

“She needs to be in prison for life, which won’t be long if the other female inmates find out what she did,” another added.
