Trump Military Adviser: Terrorists Aren’t Yelling ‘Jesus Christ’
Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and his surrogates have been making the case that terrorists and the fight against religious extremists throughout the world should be associated with Islam when applicable.
To this end, retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, a military adviser to Trump, made a point about Islamic extremists who kill.
“Political correctness kills,” Flynn said on Fox News, discussing a string of bombings around New York City during the weekend of Sept. 18, reports The Hill. “It will cause death, and we can’t have that.”
“You don’t have a lot of people yelling ‘Jesus Christ’ putting a knife in somebody’s body or putting a knife in somebody’s head,” Flynn continued. “This is a different enemy. It’s an enemy that we have not, frankly, understood in a couple of administrations, and we definitely don’t understand right now.”
Following a terrorist act in Minnesota on Sept. 17, Trump tweeted: “Under the leadership of [Barack] Obama & [Hillary] Clinton, Americans have experienced more attacks at home than victories abroad. Time to change the playbook!”
“Anyone who cannot name our enemy is not fit to lead this country,” Trump said in a prepared speech on Aug. 15, notes an official press release by his campaign. “Anyone who cannot condemn the hatred, oppression and violence of Radical Islam lacks the moral clarity to serve as our president”
President Obama has responded to Trump’s accusations of political correctness, Politifact notes.
“What exactly would using this label … accomplish?” Obama asked. “What exactly would it change? Would it make ISIL less committed to try to kill Americans? Would it bring in more allies? Is there a military strategy that is served by this? The answer is none of the above.”
Hillary Clinton offered a similar rebuttal following the terrorist attack in Orlando, Florida, on June 12.
“From my perspective, it matters what we do more than what we say,” Clinton told CNN in June. “And it mattered we got bin Laden, not what name we called him. I have clearly said we — whether you call it radical jihadism or radical Islamism, I’m happy to say either. I think they mean the same thing.”
