Mom Shoots Alleged Intruder In Her Kitchen (Photo)
When a man attempted to enter a home he assumed was vacant, he was met with a shocking surprise that will leave him traumatized for life.
A mother was home with her three children at their house in Dripping Springs, Texas, when a car pulled into the driveway and a man she did not know got out and approached their front door.
The man, later identified as 25-year-old Randall Thomas Dorsett, started turning the door handle, attempting to enter the home. The front door was locked, so the attempt was unsuccessful, but Dorsett reportedly decided to try to enter the home through another door.
According to the Hays County Sheriff’s Office, Dorsett was able to get into the garage and then entered the home through the kitchen, where he was met with something he did not expect.
The homeowner greeted Dorsett with a handgun, reports KEYE. She demanded the intruder leave her home and as she became increasingly afraid of what he was going to do, she fired a shot at him, which hit him in the abdomen.
The homeowner had called 911 when the stranger’s car pulled into her driveway and she was on the phone with dispatchers when he entered her home, KTBC reports.
Sheriff Gary Cutler of the Hays County Sheriff’s Office says that the mother was armed with a .44-caliber handgun and confronted the intruder when he walked into her kitchen.
“The kitchen area at this time was not — there were no lights on in the kitchen area, it was somewhat dark in there. But the bulk of the exchange was leave my house, she told him that numerous times. He refused, she fired one time, she was fearful for herself and her children,” Cutler said.
Dorsett’s wound is not considered to be life-threatening. He was taken by helicopter to a nearby hospital, where he is expected to make a full recovery. Police described his gunshot wound as a “through and through.”
When he is released from the hospital, Dorsett will be arrested for burglary. The case will then head to a grand jury for review.
Investigators are unsure of why Dorsett was in the remote and rural area.
The alleged intruder was recently released from the Williamson County Jail, where he was serving time for aggravated assault of a police officer.
According to KTBC, the woman’s husband was not home because he was out with friends, so she was home with her three children, ages 9, 14 and 17.
