Rashida Tlaib Tweets About ‘Hateful’ Note Left On Front Door Of Her Office

Rep. Rashida Tlaib, a member of a group of outspoken progressives in the Democratic freshman class, shared a post-it note which had been left outside her office. The note was addressed to Rep. Ilhan Omar, and accused her of anti-Semitism. Tlaib and Omar are the first Muslim women to serve in Congress.

Tlaib tweeted, “This is the hateful rhetoric & bullying on my door today. Stop the fear mongering & [blatant] lies. Come here w/ the value that all beings deserve human rights, including Palestinians. @IlhanMN & I fight for equality & justice for all. There’s nothing antisemitic about that!”

The post-it is believed to be a response to Omar’s controversial comments about the pro-Israel lobbying group, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). Many have criticized the group, labeling it as anti-Semitic.

The post-it read: “Stop your disgusting Jew hatred. Your sign says ‘Justice for all.’ That means Jews too. Your Jihad against the Jews will fail. Am Yisrael Chai!” The last phrase is a Jewish song title, meaning “The people of Israel live.”

Omar has been facing a political firestorm since she commented that support for Israel is “all about the Benjamins.” She also suggested that AIPAC and other similar groups were pushing “allegiance” to foreign countries.

House Democrats were quick to criticize her remarks, condemning anti-Semitism and discrimination of other forms.

The comment’s responses were scrutinized and some progressives maintained that Omar was singled out for noting the power of pro-Israel lobbying groups. Republicans, on the other hand, demanded the removal of Omar from the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

United States President Donald Trump was quick to use the controversy to call the Democratic Party “an anti-Jewish party” after 2020 presidential candidates declined to attend the annual AIPAC conference.
