Trump Makes Surprise Visit To Louisiana Flood Victims
Donald Trump made a visit to Louisiana, were parts of the state are continuing to weather devastating flood waters. Trump and running mate Mike Pence stopped by a Baptist church outside Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on August 19.
“I came here to help,” Trump told a crowd at Greenwell Springs Baptist Church, notes The Advocate.
In a speech late that night in Michigan, Trump reiterated his support.
“We mourn for the lives lost, and we pledge our help, comfort and support to every last person in need,” Trump began. “To the people of Louisiana: We are with you, and we will always be with you. In my visit, I saw not only the suffering of our people, but also their strength, courage and unbeatable spirit. Their spirit will overcome.”
Louisiana Gov. John bel Edwards, a Democrat, was caught by surprise of Trump’s visit.
“Donald Trump hasn’t called the governor to inform him of his visit,” a statement by the governor’s office reads. “We welcome him to LA, but not for a photo-op. Instead we hope he’ll consider volunteering or making a sizable donation to the LA Flood Relief Fund to help the victims of this storm.”
“He wanted to know percentages of homes damaged in the area, around about how many would have flood insurance,” Terry Phinney, a member and maintenance supervisor of the Greenwell Springs Baptist Church, said of Trump’s visit, reports the Los Angeles Times.
“I just appreciate his passion,” Phinney continued. “When he looked me in the eye and shook my hand, it felt real. The guy is down here for more than just a vote. I feel like this is legit. So he’s got my vote.”
President Barack Obama is scheduled to visit Louisiana on August 23, notes The Advocate.
Hillary Clinton has not announced any plans to visit the state, but posted to her Facbeook page that her “heart breaks for Louisiana, and right now, the relief effort can’t afford any distractions. The very best way this team can help is to make sure Louisianans have the resources they need.”
