Man’s $3 Thrift Store Buy Turns Out To Be A Treasure

An 81-year-old man was shocked to find out that an item he bought at a thrift store for $3 was worth so much more than he ever expected.

The man, who identified himself only as Leroy, said he bought the painting at a Goodwill store in Anderson County, South Carolina, for $3. A year and a half later, he wanted to sell it online, so he had his daughter look up the value. He was expecting it to be worth “$100 or a couple hundred,” but it wound up being worth more than $100,000.

She went on “Antiques Roadshow,” where art experts told her the 17th century Flemish painting might be worth $30,000, reports The Huffington Post. The painting later sold at auction for $190,000.

“It’s the biggest find I’ve ever had,” Leroy said. “I can only thank Goodwill for that.”

The man said he plans to split the profits with his son and daughter-in-law, and use his portion to do some home improvement projects.

“Good for him!” one reader commented on Newsiosity’s Facebook page.

“WOW! Congrats,” another added.
