Attacker Turns Himself In For Beating An Innocent Man
After the prolonged assault of an innocent man in a New York City restaurant, police have apprehended one of the suspects responsible for delivering the beating.
Suspect Kariem Roberts (21) was arrested on March 17 after he turned himself in to the police. Roberts was charged with counts of robbery, gang assault, and menacing.
Local police have yet to arrest the other participants involved in the attack on 37-year-old Joseph Molohon.
Molohon was frequenting a Texas Chicken & Burgers on the evening of February 16 when he overheard two men exclaiming that they did not have enough money to pay for their food, according to the New York Post.
“That night, I’d gone to pick up money from [Social Security] and then sat down to have dinner,” recounted Molohon about the night he was attacked.
“I help everybody. I help people with cigarettes. If they ask me for money, I’ll give them a dollar or two. I’m a really nice person.”
At this juncture, Molohon offered to pay for their food, only to be faced with verbal confrontation, physical intimidation, and eventually assault.
“[The attackers] started saying stuff like, ‘Why are talking to me?'” continued Molohon.
“Then he took my cane, which was leaning on the table, and hit me over the head. The next thing I knew I was on the floor.”
Video footage of the incident shows two men sternly addressing another party out-of-view, who is presumably Molohon, and then proceeding to attack while multiple other men join in punching and kicking the fallen victim.
Molohon reportedly had a seizure close to the beating, an episode which he connects to the blows to his head.
“I’m epileptic, I have grand maul seizures,” said Molohon, according to the New York Daily News.
“I’m not supposed to be hit on the head, and I got hit on the left side. […] When I was two years old I got hit on the head with a brick, and that caused epileptic seizures, and I’ve been epileptic all my life.”
The assailants reportedly went through one of Molohon’s pockets when he was down on the floor after the beating.
“I noticed one of them trying to get in my pocket, but my money was in the other pocket,” recounts Molohon in reference to security camera footage that shows him laying on one side on the ground.
“I had almost $1,000 on me. […] They didn’t get my money.”
Molohon was left with a fractured cheekbone from the blows he received during the attack.
