Clooney: There Will Be No President Trump

Actor George Clooney is confident that presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump won’t win the White House in November.

“There’s not going to be a President Donald Trump,” Clooney said at the Cannes Film Festival on May 12, according to USA Today.

“That’s not going to happen,” Clooney added as a group of international journalists applauded the Hollywood star. “Fear is not going to be something that drives our country. We’re not going to be scared of Muslims or immigrants or women. We’re not actually afraid of anything. We’re not going to use fear. So that’s not going to be an issue.”

Clooney, who recently held a multi-million dollar fundraiser for Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton and admitted that the amount of money in politics was “obscene” in an interview with NBC, went on to blame the media for causing Trump’s political rise.

“Trump is the result of the news programs not asking follow-up questions,” Clooney said. “It’s really easy because the cable news numbers go up. 24-hour news doesn’t mean you get more news. It ust means you get the same news more.”

Although Clooney said xenophobia and misogyny were the reasons people vote for Trump, many voters who picked the brash billionaire over others in the GOP field were attracted to his plan to restructure free trade deals, a rarity among both parties. It’s a plan that has won Trump, as well as his Democratic counterpart, Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, support among the working class.

“Here’s what I’m sayin’,” one Trump voter called in to say on WBUR’s “On Point” on May 9.

“If you vote for Trump, could it not just be that you’re a workin’ dude who got destroyed by NAFTA like my old man? Couldn’t it just be you’re like one of my uncles who can’t dig coal anymore ’cause Obama won’t let him? Can you not just be a family guy who’s got three kids he’s trying to support who knows the TPP is just gonna destroy more jobs? Can he not just be a guy working for a wage that you know is probably $3 less on the hour because there’s illegal labor all over the country?”
