‘People Are Going To Vote 10 Times’: Trump Worried About Voter Fraud
Republican nominee Donald Trump said he worries that he might lose the 2016 presidential campaign because of voter fraud.
“Well, I’m looking at all of these decisions coming down from the standpoint of identification/voter ID,” Trump told Fox News, referring to recent federal court rulings across the nation that struck down discriminatory voter ID laws in several states. “And I’m saying, what do you mean? You don’t have to have voter ID to now go in and vote and it’s a little bit scary and I’ve heard a lot of bad things.”
Trump went on to say that he believes there were cases of voter fraud in the 2012 presidential campaign that impacted then-Republican nominee Mitt Romney
“Four years ago, I was hearing a lot of bad things having to do with the Romney campaign where when the vote came out there were some districts that were shockingly different from what they were anticipated to be,” Trump said. “I’ve been seeing it and I’ve been hearing it a lot. The whole thing with voter ID identification I think is really – I mean people are going to walk in, they are going to vote 10 times maybe. Who knows? They are going to vote 10 times.”
Trump also told the Washington Post that he’s worried about voter fraud.
“If the election is rigged, I would not be surprised,” Trump said. “The voter ID situation has turned out to be a very unfair development. We may have people vote 10 times.”
Voter fraud is often talked about among Republican politicians and conservative media sources, but studies have shown that it is largely a myth, according to the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University Law School.
During the 2004 presidential election in Wisconsin, for example, there were only seven substantiated cases of voter fraud out of nearly 3 million votes. Each of those cases was from a person with a felony conviction trying to cast a vote, the Brennan Center study found.
Nonetheless, Trump is warning Republicans to be on the look-out for voter fraud.
“I am very concerned and I hope the Republicans are going to be very watchful and I hope the authorities are going to be very watchful,” Trump told Fox News.
