Articles Of Impeachment Filed Against President Trump
Democratic Rep. Brad Sherman of California revealed he has filed articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump.
Sherman contends Trump should be impeached due to his alleged interference in the FBI’s investigation of former national security adviser Michael Flynn after the president fired former FBI Director James Comey in May 2017, according to USA Today.
Sherman said the filing is “the first step on a very long road.” The member of Congress said he believes the effort will eventually gain traction.
“If the impulsive incompetency continues, then eventually — many, many months from now — Republicans will join the impeachment effort,” Sherman said.
In an interview with Fox News’ Tucker Carlson, Sherman explained why he believes Trump obstructed justice, reports Real Clear Politics.
“Most simply, he threatened Comey, in order to get Comey to curtail the investigation of Flynn,” he said. “That’s obstruction of justice, and it lines up perfectly with the code section and with the cases that have defined it. Secondly, he fired Comey, and then said that his reason, or that the effect, was to curtail or thwart the investigation to the general Russia matter. And of course, in the last couple of days, we’ve learned how important that Russia matter was … Ineffective obstruction of justice is a crime. If you threaten an FBI officer and say, you better not go forward or I’m going to do this or that, and the FBI officer just laughs it off, that’s still obstruction of justice…”
White House press secretary Sarah Sanders called Sherman’s filing “utterly and completely ridiculous.” Sanders also called it “a political game at its worst,” according to All That’s Fab.
Although the articles of impeachment have been filed, it is unlikely any action will be taken in the near or immediate future, USA Today noted.
Democratic Rep. Al Green of Texas was the only member of Congress to come forward in support of Sherman’s filing. With a Republican majority and few Democrats to support the filing, it will likely not go anywhere.
In May 2017, Green made a speech on the House floor, calling for Trump’s impeachment the week after Comey was fired and stories surfaced that the president had asked Comey to drop the investigation into Flynn.
“It’s a position of conscience for me,” Green said during his speech. “This is about what I believe. And this is where I stand. I will not be moved.”
