Parents Give Son $250,000 To Leave And Never Contact Them Again
A jobless man took to Reddit asking for financial advice from other users on how to invest his money — but the conversation soon turned into a therapy session about the man’s parents.
“I’ve been ‘bought off’ by my parents,” the man posted. “They told me I am no longer welcome to live with them, and I guess in some sort of twisted way of not feeling bad about it, they are giving me $250,000 to not contact them ever again.”
The man, who goes by the username optimalcontrol, wrote that he always felt his brother was better at everything, leaving him to be a “lost cause.”
“It doesn’t mean I did bad,” the man wrote. “I was just a little above average while he was always the best at everything; academia, sports, social life, you name it.
“I don’t know why but my parents seemed to always be ashamed of me. I didn’t get into trouble, I was a quiet kid, I did what I had to do and I tried not to get in anyone’s way.”
The original poster’s brother died after being in a coma for 27 days due to a car accident three years earlier. He says his parents started comparing him to his now-deceased brother even more than they had before.
“I never wanted to cause any trouble but I just couldn’t take it anymore and eventually I couldn’t put up with the abuse any longer,” the man wrote. “I didn’t do anything radical, I just started talking back and standing up for myself.”
When the poster moved away for college, the friction between him and his parents subsided for a bit. However, upon returning home to look for employment the year before, his parents ordered him to leave and never return.
“Last week my parents told me I have a month to move out and not contact them again.”
The man did not elaborate on his plans for the $250,000.
As to why his parents decided to cut him off? One user posed an interesting, albeit sad, theory: “Is it possible that one or both of your parents aren’t your biological parents? There’s some reason that they are ashamed of you, and they obviously haven’t told you what that reason is.”
