Mother Sues Daycare After Baby Suffers Severe Burns
A Florida mother has filed a lawsuit against a Belle Glade day care center after her 11-month-old son suffered severe burns when boiling water from a warmed bottle fell on him in their care.
Estonia Eloi says that her 11-month-old son, Nathaniel, suffered severe burns while under the care of the staff at Heart to Heart Learning Center in Belle Glade. Boiling liquid from a bottle fell directly onto the baby, leaving burns all over his face and body.
The mother says she understands that accidents happen, but that the Heart to Heart staff was not helpful during the incident and never even called 911 after seeing the burns. She says the staff initially told her that her son had a “fever” and tried to cover once side of his face when they sent him home.
“When I got to the door, she told me, here here, go to the hospital, he has a fever,” Eloi told CBS12. “But I didn’t get to see this side of his face. I know it’s an accident but you didn’t try to help my child. He could’ve died at the school.”
“I couldn’t believe they did that to my baby, and they’re not trying to help me out,” she added.
Eloi took her son to St. Mary’s Hospital, but he then had to be airlifted to Jackson Memorial Burn Center in Miami, where he was treated for severe second-degree burns.
The mother’s lawyer says the daycare workers failed to follow standard safety protocols, such as handling bottle warmers near infants and neglecting to call 911.
“We have a defenseless child, who can’t speak for himself to say this is what happened,” Eloi’s attorney Jason Williams told CBS12. “We have to protect the little ones the most.”
