Trump: Deport U.S. Citizens With ‘Extreme Views’
Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump said he would deport the father of the Orlando gay club shooter, despite the fact he’s a U.S. citizen.
Seddique Mateen is the father of Omar Mateen, the man who shot and killed 49 people at a gay club in Orlando, Florida. The elder Mateen was born in Afghanistan, but is a naturalized U.S. citizen. The way the law stands now, revoking citizenship is a rare process that only occurs in extreme circumstances, such as fighting for your native country if that country is battling the U.S. or if one refuses to testify before Congress, according to New Citizen.
But Trump told Fox News that if he had his way, Seddique could be deported simply for having “extreme views,” which there isn’t proof that he actually has. But Trump would deport him, anyway.
“What do we do when we find somebody that has extreme views?” Hannity asked Trump at a town hall in Milwaukee, according to Talking Points Memo.
“I’d throw him out,” Trump answered, referring to Seddique. “If you look at him, I’d throw him out.”
No specifics were given about what would define “extreme views,” but Trump said that, in general, there shouldn’t be so many restrictions when it comes to deportation.
“Whether it’s racial profiling or politically correct, we better get smart,” he said. “We are letting tens of thousands of people into our country. We don’t know what the hell we’re doing.”
Seddique has said he supports Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and recently attended one her rallies, where he was seen sitting directly behind the candidate.
In order to avoid controversy, the Clinton campaign issued a statement that attempted to distance her from Seddique.
“She disagrees with his views and disavows his support,” a campaign spokesman said, according to ABC News.
After the Orlando gay club shooting, Seddique said his son had no right to kill gays because “God will punish those involved in homosexuality,” reported the New York Daily News.
