Trump After Being Named GOP Nominee: ‘America First!’

AmericaNow Staff  ·  July 19, 2016

After a primary he was not expected to win but ended up dominating, Donald Trump has been named the presidential nominee for the Republican Party.

At the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, the delegate votes were counted and Trump was named the 2016 GOP nominee for President of the United States. Trump won 39 states during the primary, according to 270towin.com, and collected 1,543 delegates. The New York-bred billionaire’s closest rival was Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, who took the other 11 states, which was too little to compete against Trump’s dominance of the GOP primary.

When the final votes were officially tallied during the evening of June 19, Trump was named the nominee of a party he has been both revered and vilified by ever since he announced his candidacy in June 2015.

Trump’s son, Donald Trump, Jr., cast the votes for the New York delegation, which put his father over the 1,237 threshold needed to clinch the nomination.

“It’s not a campaign anymore. It’s a movement, speaking to real Americans, giving them a voice again” Trump Jr. said, according to Fox News. “It is my honor to be able to throw Donald Trump over the top in the delegate count tonight with 89 delegates… . Congratulations Dad, we love you.”

Trump Jr. also said that the Trump campaign would “put New York into play” for the Republican Party. The Empire State hasn’t voted for a Republican president since 1988.

As has been his style throughout his campaign, Trump addressed the news via Twitter.

“Such a great honor to be the Republican Nominee for President of the United States. I will work hard and never let you down! AMERICA FIRST!” he wrote.
