Baby Left Blind, Deaf After Being Maimed With Hammer

A baby was left blind and deaf, and her brother was killed, in a brutal hammer attack at the hands of their mother’s partner.

Maria, a 1-year-old baby, was left with horrific injuries – some that cost her her vision and most of her hearing – in a hammer attack that killed her twin brother. Biddy Sagar Das was arrested in suspicion of carrying out the attack following a major search by police for a suspect. 

A family friend told the Daily Mail that the children’s mother, Cristinela Datcu, remained by her daughter’s bedside as she fought for her life.

“We are all praying that little Maria recovers her eyesight and isn’t permanently blinded by the attack,” Florentina Ilie said. “Cristinela sits in hospital with Maria, willing, wishing and praying for her full recovery after surgery, for what are quite daunting head injuries for such a young child.”

Ilie said she began a fundraising effort to help her friend through the painful time in her life.

“Cristinela is a hard-working ordinary person who has a job in a North London hotel, with the twins and the income the family had, they managed to live a reasonable but by no means luxurious life,” she said. “Sadly now (although I’m sure she hasn’t had time to even think about it with much more pressing issues on her mind) Cristinela is to be faced with a mountain of expenses for which she has little savings.”

The story quickly went viral, with many condemning the disturbing crime and calling for Datcu’s imprisonment.

“The article doesn’t come out and say it, but to me it seems it was her partner who did this to her kids! Absolutely horrific! Prison will be too good for him. Anyone who murders a child should have to endure the same pain!!!!” one Daily Mail reader commented on the site’s Facebook page.

“I can’t even imagine how much pain they both went through and the poor little baby girl is still going through it is so heartbreaking, how any one could even do this is to such innocent little babies is beyond belief, he can not be of this world, monster, rip baby boy and I hope the little girl’s pain and fear go away bless her,” another wrote.

“Kill this evil monster how could anyone hurt a child hes sick and i hope hes tortured everyday of is life or better still tortured and a slow painful death this is heartbreaking the poor mother lost her child and as one injured poor babys,” another added.
