Barbara Streisand: I’ll Leave America If Trump Wins
Barbra Streisand said she will leave the U.S. if Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is elected.
Streisand told Michael Usher, an Australian “60 Minutes” correspondent, “I’m either coming to your country, if you’ll let me in, or Canada,” if Trump wins, Newsmax reports.
The legendary singer and actress acknowledged that Trump is “saying things that probably a lot of people have thought, but have never said,” and pondered whether the political climate is like “a blister that has to pop,” in which Americans can get Trump’s rhetoric out of their system and then “get back to sanity.”
Streisand, a lifelong, outspoken Democrat, said the upcoming election has her concerned. She supports Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, and said that she does not know what will happen if Trump wins.
“I don’t take anything for granted,” Streisand said. “I want Hillary Clinton to be president of the United States. But there is still a lot of sexism, and ‘A woman being president?’ … and making fun of her, the way [Donald Trump] insults her right and left, and has no facts.”
Streisand, one of the most vocal celebrity supporters of Clinton, is scheduled to host an LGBT for Hillary fundraiser in New York in September. Tickets for the fundraiser will cost as much as $250,000.
She has frequently expressed her support for the former secretary of state, and wrote in a March op-ed for The Huffington Post that Trump’s rise in politics is “at once terrifying and a joke that isn’t funny.” She also wrote that Clinton is held to a much harsher standard than Trump because of her gender.
“Voters should weigh the substance of what a candidate has to offer: his/her policies, his/her agenda, his/her experience, knowledge and demeanor in dealing with world leaders,” Streisand wrote on March 25. “The time has also come for voters, media, political talking heads and all of us to stop holding any politician to a different standard because she happens to be a woman. All voters should stand in agreement on this issue if no other.”
