Black Panther Leader Robbed, Calls 911 For Help, Gets Perfect Response
A member of the New Black Panthers made headlines after he admitted to having a slight change of heart about police officers following an incident in which he was robbed at gunpoint.
Ali Muhammad, a well known advocate in the Tampa, Florida, area for police reform, was working as a DJ at a nightclub in Ybor City when the incident occurred. While walking down the street at around 3 a.m., Muhammad was robbed.
“I was approached by a young black male who just came up to me and said, ‘Give me your earrings and your backpack,'” he told FOX13. “He took everything I had. At the time, he didn’t take my cell phone, and that’s what made me call 911.”
Muhammad followed the suspect down the street but was told by 911 dispatchers to stop doing so. Along the way, the suspect reportedly robbed two women.
“One lady, she was in tears. She said she couldn’t believe it. He had the gun in her mouth,” he said of the incident.
Just 10 minutes after calling police, authorities began searching for the suspect. Soon after, they spotted 18-year-old Antwan Robertson and chased him to a Burger King parking lot. Muhammad was able to get his stolen jewelry and backpack returned to him.
As a result of the incident, Muhammad said he had a new appreciation for officers.
“Police can be hostile and very belligerent. Friday night, I met some officers who [were] about business, and that was getting a bad guy off the street,” he said.
The man’s story quickly went viral, with many criticizing his typically anti-police views as hypocritical given the fact that he called for help when he needed it.
“It’s unbelievable to me that these people have to experience something like that to switch their focus from a false BS narrative to a real issue, black on black crime. 7,000 people died last year from that and now he’s going to advocate??? Ugh. But better late than never. Hopefully they don’t kill him for going off script,” one Mad World News reader commented on the site’s Facebook page.
“Kudos to the officers! They upheld their sworn duty, they did not get involved with politic, or let their emotions get in the way, they simply did their job,” another wrote.
Others felt that Muhammad shouldn’t be criticized simply because he had a change of heart based on his experience.
“I don’t recognize BLM or the Black Panthers, but when man realized he’d been wrong in his thinking, he admitted it. Now he wants to do something positive. In his position, he could have continued his hatred of police. Now he wants to do something to heal the divide. And what’s wrong with that?” one reader commented.
