Young Boy Comes Home With Line Drawn On Head, Mother Irate When She Learns Why
A Lehigh Acres, Florida, mother was outraged when her 13-year-old son was sent home from school because he had a side part on his head from a haircut.
Yasmin Rivera said she disagreed with school officials’ claim that her son’s hair violated their dress code. The dress code forbid “lines/designs in eyebrows or hair.”
“I felt embarrassed, like everyone was looking at me,” the boy, Jovany Rivera, told WINK.
The mother said that when she first got a call from her son’s school, officials told her that the issue with his hair had been fixed by a teacher.
“She covered it up is what she said. She covered up his line and that she sent him back to class and I said, ‘you covered up his line?’ She goes, ‘yes, we do that sometimes for students so they can go back to class. Sometimes we spray something in their hair.'”
When the boy came home, his mother said it looked as though someone “took a sharpie and tried to color it in.”
“It looked like a crayon that you use on your face. Like when you want to draw cat whiskers. I felt dirty, I just didn’t feel like it was right,” Jovany said. “[Everyone asked] what happened to your hair? Who put that in there?”
The Lee County School District told WINK that “school personnel would not offer to do this for students without parent acknowledgement.”
Rivera claimed, however, that nobody asked for her permission to even touch her son.
“I was not happy with the teacher touching my son, putting product in his hair without my permission. … Missing class, pulling him out, humiliating him, sending him back to class, and then calling me the next day for the same thing,” she said.
Jovany went back to school the next day, but was taken out of class again and sent home for the second day in a row.
“Every minute that we pull him out of class for a hairstyle issue is hurting him. I feel that there’s bigger issues that need to be addressed and this hairstyle is not one,” Rivera said.
Many readers expressed outrage over the incident, calling on the school to make it right.
“Don’t school teachers, administrators, etc have more important things to do? Their reaction is totally ridiculous. If this kid’s haircut is their main concern, I think the school is in trouble,” one Mad World News reader commented on the site’s Facebook page.
“First, no one should touch someone else without permission, in this case from the parent. If the haircut was so offensive, call the parents and explain to them the problem and let them take care of it. In this case, I would charge the teacher with assault,” another wrote.
“Call the police, file assault charges against the principal and the teacher, file harassment charges against both of them, then get a lawyer and sue the teacher, principal, school board, and the school district for physical bodily harm, public humiliation, defamation of character, failure to provide educational services, denying educational education, punitive damages and emotional damages. You should sue for no less than 10 million dollars. What that school did was wrong,” another added.
