Girl’s Grilled Cheese Sandwich Causes Violent Reaction (Video)
A Massachusetts family filed a lawsuit against Panera Bread, saying an employee added peanut butter to their daughter’s grilled cheese sandwich, despite specific warnings she was allergic to the ingredient (video below).
John and Elissa Russo ordered food from Panera Bread’s website, and specified in two different places that their daughter was allergic to peanuts. When they received the food, the girl took a bite of her sandwich and realized someone had spread 2 tablespoons of peanut butter on it.
“Am I going to die?” the 6-year-old asked her parents, Newsiosity reported. The girl’s frantic parents called a pediatrician, who told them to give her antihistamine medication Benadryl. She soon started vomiting, prompting them to rush her to the hospital.
At the hospital, the girl broke out in hives and had to stay overnight.
Russo called Panera Bread to complain, and told the Boston Globe the manager apologized and blamed the incident on a language barrier. The person making the sandwich, he claimed, did not speak English. Russo said he wasn’t buying the story.
“Did they just see ‘peanut’ and not the ‘allergy’ part?” he questioned. “Is this somebody doing this on purpose? Because it’s two freakin’ tablespoons of peanut butter on this sandwich and it’s a grilled cheese.”
An attorney for the family said another family came forward with a similar story from the same Panera franchise. The anonymous parents didn’t sue like the Russos did, but claimed their child was in the hospital for a week as a result of peanut butter being spread on a grilled cheese sandwich.
The family’s lawsuit claimed Panera “engaged in unfair and deceptive business practices by adding peanut butter to the plaintiff’s grilled cheese sandwich knowing that [she] has a life-threatening peanut allergy.”
