Clinton Lays Out Vision For America In Acceptance Speech

Hillary Clinton gave her speech at the Democratic National Convention to accept the party’s nomination for president.

The speech was largely an attack on Republican nominee Donald Trump as she laid out how she would handle the issues on the minds of Americans.

“If you believe that every man, woman and child in America has the right to affordable health care … join us,” Clinton said.

Clinton also tried to intercept a message that Trump has rallied on since the beginning of his campaign, which is that current trade deals are unfair for Americans and China is taking advantage of them.

“If you believe that we should say ‘no’ to unfair trade deals … that we should stand up to China … that we should support our steelworkers and autoworkers and homegrown manufacturers … join us,” Clinton said.

Earlier in the speech, the former Secretary of State also made a play for supporters of Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, many of whom spent the week protesting the Democratic Party’s establishment during the convention.

“Bernie, your campaign inspired millions of Americans, particularly the young people who threw their hearts and souls into our primary,” Clinton said. “You’ve put economic and social justice issues front and center, where they belong.”

But Clinton spent much of the speech on Trump, whom she mentioned 20 times, attacking the billionaire’s business record and policy proposals, which have been described as racist and untenable by critics.

“So enough with the bigotry and bombast,” Clinton said. “Donald Trump’s not offering real change; he’s offering empty promises.

“What are we offering? A bold agenda to improve the lives of people across our country — to keep you safe, to get you good jobs, and to give your kids the opportunities they deserve. The choice is clear, my friends.”

In a campaign statement, Trump dismissed Clinton’s criticisms.

“Hillary Clinton’s speech was an insulting collection of cliches and recycled rhetoric,” Trump said. “She spent the evening talking down to the American people she’s looked down on her whole life.”

He added: “Hillary Clinton says America is stronger together. But in Hillary Clinton’s America, millions of people are left out in the cold. She only stands together with the donors and special interests who’ve bankrolled her entire life.”
