Clinton’s Lead Over Trump Continues To Grow
Presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton has gained a lot of ground over her likely Republican rival, Donald Trump, according to a Washington Post/ABC poll.
Clinton grew a 12-point lead over Trump in one month (51 to 39 percent), according to the poll, which showed them in a statistical tie in May. Trump’s plunge is likely the result of several controversial statements and missteps he made in June, which has eroded public confidence in a potential Trump presidency.
According to The Washington Post, two-thirds of Americans said Trump is unqualified to lead the nation; they feel anxious about him being the commander-in-chief; they believe he has made unfairly biased comments about women, minorities and Muslims; and they believe his statements about a federal judge of Mexican-American descent were racist.
Unsurprisingly, 91 percent of Democrats said they disapproved of Trump’s rhetoric. But 60 percent of independent voters – crucial to winning a general election – also highly disapproved.
And nearly half of Republicans – 41 percent – disapproved of Trump’s allegedly racist comments.
Despite high disapproval of Trump’s remarks, there were some signs of hope for the GOP candidate when it came to the question of who voters would actually cast a ballot for.
Trump has a slight lead over Clinton among independents, 45 to 43 percent. And among white voters, he leads Clinton 50 to 40 percent.
However, Trump does worse than Clinton when it comes to who members of their respective parties will vote for.
Among Democrats, 90 percent plan to vote for Clinton, while only 6 percent would vote for Trump.
Among Republicans, 77 percent plan to vote for Trump, while 10 percent would vote for Clinton.
“I think there’s no question that he’s made a number of mistakes over the last few weeks,” Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said on ABC’s “This Week,” according to The Washington Post. “I think they’re beginning to right the ship. It’s a long time until November. And the burden, obviously, will be on him to convince people that he can handle this job.”
As for Trump, he wasn’t impressed by the poll results.
“The ‘dirty’ poll done by @ABC @washingtonpost is a disgrace,” Trump tweeted on June 26. “Even they admit that many more Democrats were polled. Other polls were good.”
