A Louisiana man sacrificed his own life to save his fiancee from getting hit by a vehicle.

The incident occurred in late August. John Newhart Jr. was driving his motorcycle with his fiancee, Kimberly West, when he lost control of his bike, causing her to fall off, KSLA reported. When Newhart went to run after her, he pushed her out of the way of an oncoming car.

Newhart was in serious condition in the ICU after the accident. He passed away shortly after. The death sent shock waves through friends and family alike.

“That was my best friend, he wasn’t just my dad, he was my best friend,” the victim’s son told KSLA. “I didn’t think I’d lose him at 22.”

Still, many others commended Newhart for his selfless act.

“He went out a hero, he sacrificed himself to save the love of his life,” Newhart’s friend, whose nickname is “Pyro,” told the news station. “He tossed her out of the way, and he got hit point blank.”

“He’ll be remembered as a hero for what he did for her,” said Brandon Bridges.

“It just speaks volumes for the love story they had,” added Tommy Campbell. “The world needs to know he died saving the woman he loved.”

Newhart and West had just gotten engaged a few weeks prior to the accident.

“She thought he was going to do a karaoke song, then he grabbed the mic and proposed to her,” an associate of the victim said.

Their relationship was described as true love.

“They were set to be married in May and I’m just heartbroken that isn’t going to happen,” said Alan Joyce.

West was also placed in the ICU after the accident, but she survived. Newhart’s family planned a benefit to honor his memory.

The story of Newhart’s sacrifice began spreading all throughout social media. Several users offered their condolences to the grieving family, and praised the biker for his selflessness.

“Bless him for his sacrifice, to many people judge bikers unfairly,” wrote one Facebook user. “I’ve had a few very GOOD friends that are bikers and they are loyal and true !!!”

“God bless him he did the greatest act of all. He gave himself to save another,” wrote another. “He’s looking down smiling.”

“My condolences to Mr. Newhart and his family and friends … he’s with the angels now watching over you and his fiance…sending prayers to you all,” added another user.
