Michigan Muslims Threaten To Sue Over Chicken Sandwich, But KFC Has Brutal Reply
A Muslim couple from Michigan is suing Kentucky Fried Chicken after they said the fast food chain served them bacon on their chicken sandwiches.
According to the Dearborn Patch, the couple is seeking an unspecified amount in damages after being served bacon on their sandwiches, which were purchased at a Lincoln Park KFC.
Askar Abubaker and his wife, Hasinah Saeed, say that cheese and bacon were added to the sandwiches after they specifically requested cheese only.
When they pointed out to employees that there was bacon on their sandwiches, Abubaker said that the employees were “looking at us and smiling” throughout the incident.
A spokesperson for KFC said that the incident was the result of a miscommunication.
“At KFC we respect the religious beliefs of our guests of all faiths,” said a KFC spokesperson. “We believe this lawsuit was filed as a result of a miscommunication between the guest and our team member. We cannot comment further on pending litigation against one of our franchisees.”
According to the Detroit Free Press, the lawsuit comes following a similar case in which a woman claims she was served bacon in a vegetarian omelet she ordered at a Detroit area Denny’s restaurant.
The lawsuit says that 30-year-old Angela Montgomery first noticed that something was wrong with the omelet after she took several bites. When she took a closer look, she spotted pieces of bacon. She said that the restaurant’s manager and the waitress apologized and said that it was because the bacon container is next to containers for vegetables in their kitchen.
The manager offered to make her a new omelet free of charge, but she said that her appetite was ruined.
“Why would you have the bacon next to the vegetables, don’t you know how many people don’t eat pork,” she told employees.
Montgomery told the Detroit Free Press that pork is “an abominable food” and that a pig is “the most vile, disgusting creature on planet Earth that’s not supposed to go in your body, and I ate it. To me, that’s a poisoning. I was poisoned.”
Both lawsuits allege breach of contract and negligent representation. The claimants are seeking monetary damages for emotional and physical distress from having eaten pork. The lawsuits were both filed in Wayne County Circuit Court.
Dearborn attorney Majed Moughni is handling both cases. He said that restaurants need to change the way in which they handle ingredients.
“You can’t allow this practice to continue, whether you’re Muslim or Jewish, and you walk into an establishment and they don’t care about what they are serving.”
