Representative Ted Lieu was not beating around the bushes on national television when he called President Donald Trump, a “racist a**.” Representative Lieu’s comment had spurred from President Trump’s comment of telling a group of four lawmakers to go back where they came from, these lawmakers all being of a minority race.

Before Representative Lieu went ahead to call out President Trump, he gave a brief background of himself and his simple beginnings in his interview. He was also an immigrant who moved to the United States when he was three-years-old from his hometown of Taipei, Taiwan.

He recounts how he and his family struggled during the early years of migrating to the United States, with his parents selling gifts in the flee market to put food on the table. Eventually, his parents were able to open a small business that later became successful, thus achieving what most would call the “American dream.”

Representative Lieu also mentions how that is what inspired him to join the Air Force, serving active duty. In his interview he says he never thought he would see a day where the country’s president would be telling immigrants to go back where they came from, thus demonstrating a racist behavior and dividing the country instead of uniting it.

In 1972, Representative Lieu and his family immigrated to Cleveland, Ohio and was in 2014 he was first elected to Congress. He also holds the rank of a colonel serving the United States Air Force Reserves.

Additionally, he also sits on the House Judiciary Committee, the department who is also investigating a potential obstruction of justice by Trump for the Russia investigation. Such investigation was triggered when charges were not pressed against the president even after a report was turned in by special counsel Robert Mueller.

Representative Lieu’s remarks have since then grown viral on Twitter, with the #RacistPresident now the #1 trending topic on the said social media platform. He then added with his own tweet saying he is an immigrant who served an active duty since be believed America to be a great country. He went on further to say what made America great is even though his skin color differs from Trump’s or other Americans, he is no more American than he is.
