Dems File Resolution: Why Trump Is Unfit for Office
Democrats in the House of Representatives have filed a comprehensive “no confidence” resolution referencing 88 reasons why Donald Trump is unfit for his role as President of the U.S.
Democratic Rep. Steve Cohen of Tennessee spearheaded the the resolution, which, among other reasons, cites the controversies surrounding alleged ties between the Trump campaign and the Russian government as grounds for Trump’s termination.
“It’s just a sad day for Americans that we’ve come to this point,” said Cohen during a July 19 news conference, according to The Independent.
Cohen further described Trump as “a president that you wouldn’t want your children to look up to.”
“The way he talks about women, the press, the language he uses, the use of Twitter — you don’t want him to be a role model,” he said.
“It’s injurious to our culture, and it’s injurious to … our foreign policy,” he continued.
Cohen acknowledged that his resolution would likely not change the president’s behavior.
“Is it going to have an effect on him?” asked Cohen, according to The Hill. “Apparently, his family members don’t have an effect on him; his Republican friends don’t; his Cabinet members don’t.”
Cohen explained that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi gave the go-ahead for the resolution.
“She said she didn’t have a problem with us going forward with these types of actions,” said Cohen. “She preferred people to stay focused on what she thinks is the most important item present, which is an independent prosecutor bill, which I support.”
“At that point, I think Republicans will then call for an independent prosecutor,” continued Cohen.
A number of other Democrats in Congress joined Cohen in voicing their disfavor of Trump.
“This is not the behavior of the leader of the free world,” said Democratic Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas.
“Trump’s behavior is cruel and unethical, and it’s driving the people’s faith in government to dangerously low levels,” added Rep. Judy Chu, a Democrat from California.
Though a significant number of Democrats in Congress have set their sights on the president, some party members have opted to steer away from such tactics for the sake of focusing on other political issues.
Cohen is of the opinion that both are possible.
“You can attack the jobs and the economy front … and also question this president who puts our very values at stake and our democracy at stake,” said Cohen.
Chu likewise chose not to turn a blind eye towards the actions of the president.
“These are not mutually exclusive tactics to take,” said Chu. “Yes, we have to concentrate on those issues, but that doesn’t mean that we ignore what President Trump is doing to undermine this country.”
