An off-duty LAPD officer fired his gun at a group of juveniles during an altercation on February 21. The incident was captured on video (below).

On February 21, in Anaheim, California, an off-duty Los Angeles police officer got into an argument with a group of teens who walked across his property. According to Anaheim police, the issue was ongoing.

“During that confrontation, a 13-year-old male is alleged to have made a threat to the off-duty officer that he was going to shoot him,” said Anaheim Sgt. Daron Wyatt, according to KTRK.

Anaheim police say that the off-duty officer then tried to detain the teen until officers arrived. In the video, the officer can be seen holding the teen, while the teen tries to escape.

“In reality he was saying, ‘I’m going to sue you. You keep hitting me. You’re hurting me. I’m going to sue you,'” the teen’s mother, who wishes to remain unidentified, told KTRK.

A neighbor who witnessed the incident says that she heard the teen tell the officer he was going to sue him.

“He just kept on saying, ‘I’m going to sue you,'” the neighbor said. “I heard ‘sue,’ not ‘shoot.'”

In the video, the teen can be heard saying to the officer, “I didn’t do anything to hurt you. All I said was to respect the girl. You told her to ‘get off my property you piece of s**t.'”

As the confrontation turned physical, another teen can be seen shoving the off-duty officer, who continues holding onto the the teen as he falls over some bushes. More teens then begin to approach the officer, who then pulls out his gun and fires a shot toward the group. Nobody was injured in the incident.

“That was the most frightening part of it all,” the 13-year-old’s mother said. “What if that bullet would have been a couple inches closer.”

The incident sparked protests in the city of Anaheim and, according to KTLA, 24 people have been arrested during said protests.

KTLA reports that ten men, eight women, and six minors were arrested while protesting the incident. All protestors were arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor offenses, including battery on a peace officer, resisting arrest, and failure to disperse,” accoridng to Sgt. Wyatt.

An estimated 300 people participated in the protest in the Anaheim neighborhood in which the incident took place. The protestors were calling for the officer who fired a shot to be charged.

The off-duty officer involved in the incident has been placed on administrative leave, according to the LAPD.

Anaheim police are expected to release more information about the investigation during a press conference on February 23.

The mayor of Anaheim, Tom Tait, said in a statement that the city is committed to thoroughly investigating the incident.

“Like many in the community, I’ve seen the video and I’m very concerned about what it shows,” Tait said in his statement. “Anaheim is committed to a full and impartial investigation. Our city will move forward without delay.”
