Fox News Poll: Most Voters Think Trump Hiding Something In Tax Returns
Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has so far refused to release his income tax returns and a majority of Americans believe he’s hiding something.
A Fox News poll found that 60 percent of Americans, including 36 percent of Republicans, believe Trump is hiding something. Only 35 percent of Americans believe Trump is not trying to hide anything by refusing to release his income taxes.
Every major presidential nominee since 1976 has released tax returns, including Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. But Trump has said he is unable to release his tax returns because he is under a routine IRS audit. Although he could legally still release them, tax attorneys say that doing so could disadvantage him in the business world by revealing investment strategies to the world.
“I advise my clients (hundreds over the years who actually experience an IRS inquiry) to NEVER release their tax returns while an audit is going on,” said Los Angeles-based attorney Robert Barnes, according to LawNewz. “I am certain Mr. Trump’s lawyers, very capable and well-respected in this field, have advised him not to disclose his tax returns during the audit.”
But Trump is running for president of the United States and voters are accustomed to peeking into the candidates’ financial information — and Republicans want to see them, too.
According to a Quinnipiac University poll, 62 percent of Republicans want to see the GOP nominee’s tax returns.
“I don’t know what the hold-up is,” Trump supporter Wayne Kemp told CNN.
But even though voters want to see Trump’s tax returns, not many consider it to be a high priority.
According to an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll reported in The Washington Post, only 6 percent of voters consider his tax returns a top priority for them.
That gives legitimacy to Trump’s previous comment about average voters not putting much importance on his taxes.
“Nobody cares about it except some of the folks in the media,” Trump told Fox News. “Nobody cares about it.”
