Group Founded By Triple Amputee Veteran Raises $22 million, Has Started Building Border Wall
A group founded by a triple amputee Air Force veteran called “We Build the Wall” recently informed the public in a series of posts that it has started constructing its own border wall on private property near the southern border.
The announcement was made months after the group launched its GoFundMe campaign to raise millions of dollars’ worth of private donations to fund a border wall.
The group wrote in a Facebook post, “Buckle up, we’re just getting started!” Photos and videos of the construction of the border wall were attached to provide confirmation for those who doubted whether the project was actually happening.
“They said it was impossible, we proved them wrong. This new wall is the first of more to come, and we couldn’t have done it without your gracious donations” the group posted on Facebook.
Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon, who currently chairs We Build the Wall’s advisory board, has mentioned that the group has mounted a mile of border wall in the El Paso, Texas, region that connects two 21-mile segments of existing fencing.
However, it was not yet fully verified whether the new wall connects the two portions of border fencing built by the federal government.
“Border Patrol told us it’s the number one most important mile to close. The tough terrain always left it off the government list. And that’s what we focus on — private land that is not in the program and take the toughest first.” Bannon said.
Prominently, We Build The Wall has repeatedly stated that its project will be significantly less costly than Trump’s suggested border wall. Former Kansas secretary of state Kris Kobach told CNN that the half-mile wall portions would cost between $6 million and $8 million. In January, We Build the Wall’s founder estimated the wall segments would be priced at $2 million to $3 million per mile.
