Here’s How Joe Biden Is Changing His Mind On Abortion (Video)
Former Vice President Joe Biden restated his support for the Hyde Amendment. The alteration seeks to bar federal funding from going toward abortion.
The Democratic front-runner’s campaign stated that Biden had “misheard the woman on the rope line and thought she was referring to the Mexico City rule, which prevents federal aid money from going to organizations overseas that perform abortions.”
To clarify his stand, Biden’s campaign said that “he has not at this point changed his position on the Hyde Amendment.” In addition, the campaign also mentioned the following statement:
“The Hyde Amendment does not prevent organizations in the US that provide lifesaving health care services for women from receiving federal funding they need. But given the current draconian attempts to limit access to abortion, if avenues for women to access their protected rights under Roe V. Wade are closed, he would be open to repeal.”
Biden’s unwavering support for the Hyde Amendment has set him apart from other 2020 Democratic candidates like Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Sen. Kamala Harris, who showed full-swing opposition towards the amendment. Sen. Warris even called for the repeal of Hyde last month in a Medium post.
“All women ― no matter where they live, where they’re from, how much money they make, or the color of their skin ― are entitled to access the high-quality, evidence-based reproductive health care that is envisioned by Roe,” Warris wrote.
“The establishment of these federal statutory rights would invalidate contradictory state laws, such as the Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio bans,” adding that “they would also end the political games being played by right-wing courts to try and narrow Roe’s protections. And because these federal protections would be valid on a variety of constitutional grounds — including equal protection and the commerce clause — they would ensure that choice would remain the law of the land even if the Supreme Court overturns Roe.”
Despite Biden’s Hyde Amendment support, numerous national abortion rights groups have provided opposing statements to those of the former Vice President.
