Kansas Militia Members Arrested For Planning Terror Attack
Members of a Kansas militia group have been arrested for allegedly plotting a terrorist attack. The three men, members of the militia known as the Crusaders, had planned to bomb an apartment complex home to many Somali refugees.
“It’s alleged the defendants conducted surveillance to size up potential targets,” Tom Beall, acting US attorney in Kansas, told Democracy Now. “They stockpiled firearms, ammunition and explosive components. They even prepared a manifesto describing their beliefs, to be published after the bombing. These charges are based on eight months of investigation by the FBI that is alleged to have taken the investigators deep into a hidden culture of hatred and violence. Many Kansans may find it as startling as I have that such things could happen here.”
The attack was allegedly planned for November 9.
“I’m here in the United States like 15 years now,” Abdulkadir Mohamed, a Somali living in Kansas, said. “I never meet any problem, except today, when I heard this information. And it makes me shocked and scared.”
According to the Washington Post, the US Department of Justice announced on October 14 that the three men, Curtis Allen, Gavin Wright, and Patrick Eugene Stein, will face federal charges for their plot.
“They chose the target location based on their hatred of these groups, their perception that these groups represent a threat to American society, a desire to inspire other militia groups, and a desire to ‘wake people up,’” a court document states.
“The only f-ing way this country’s ever going to get turned around is it will be a bloodbath and it will be a nasty, messy motherf—er,” Stein, one of the plotters, was recorded saying.
A court document adds, “Stein, at various times, yelled at Somali women dressed in traditional garb, calling them ‘f—ing raghead b—ch,’.”
