Man Finds Strange Bag, Calls Cops When He Sees Contents

A Columbus, Ohio, man was shocked when he found a strange blue bag on the side of the road and opened it up to see just what was inside – $14,000 in cash.

Jake Bowers told WBNS that he was driving with his family when he spotted the bag.

“My wife was driving and I said ‘honey, turn around there’s something in the road back there,'” he said. The bag, he said, looked like it might have been someone’s laptop bag.

“It was off to the side a little bit almost in the gutter,” he said. “We grabbed the bag and the kids said what is it!?”

When they finally saw what was in the bag – thousands of dollars in cash along with a wallet and ID – Bowers was stunned.

“There were a couple envelopes and then the corners were open and you could see inside that they were stuffed with hundred dollar bills,” he said. Specifically, there were 140 hundred dollar bills inside – totaling $14,000.

“It was a good opportunity to teach the kids about doing the right thing,” he said. Bowers decided to take the money directly to the Worthington Police station, where officers determined the rightful owner and returned it.

A police report stated that the owner of the cash had taken it to a car dealer to purchase a vehicle, but ended up leaving without buying anything. The owner said he thinks he left the bag on the roof of his car and forgot, causing it to fall off while he drove away.

“That is a great story! This restores my faith in humanity a little bit,” one Mad World News reader commented on the site’s Facebook page.

“God bless honest people,” another wrote.

“Glad to know there are still honest people out there! Great job Dad!” another added.

Some readers questioned why the man had $14,000 in cash to buy a car.

“Hmmmm….are there any cars in that goofy corner lot that are worth $14k? What sort of “bag” was the $14k in? The article just says “bag” every time. Surely we are not talking about a brown paper bag here. $14k in $100 bills, in a “bag”, doesn’t sound like someone was going to buy a used car,” one WCMH reader commented.

“You’re not sure of the police jurisdiction, so you don’t call anyone? And how many people pay for cars with briefcases of cash? Something sounds funky,” another added.
