Man Hid Disturbing Secret Every Day For 33 Years, Then His Girlfriend Discovered It
A Florida woman called police after discovering her stalker boyfriend killed his parents and younger brother when he was 14.
Second-grade teacher Candy met Jovan Collier on a sunny Florida beach, ABC News reported.
“It was a whirlwind,” Candy told the news station. “We hit it off that day. … It was really quick. He was very charming, [a] smooth talker, sweet, you know, funny.”
Candy said she and Collier had both recently moved to the St. Petersburg area, and wanted to build a new life.
“I was looking for someone to share my life with,” Candy explained. “I was just missing a significant other that I really wanted.”
“I’d been through a lot of tough times, lots of deaths in my family,” Candy added. “That first day at the beach, he told me that his parents had been killed in a tragic car accident by drunk drivers. He had always felt like he was missing something.”
Candy later learned that there parents had actually been his adoptive parents. Collier’s biological mother later reconnected with him.
But In 2009, Candy and Collier’s relationship fell apart when Candy found his profile on a racy dating website.
“I made him move out,” she recalled. “He moved out. I called it off.
“It was a nightmare. I was living a nightmare.”
That’s when Collier began pleading for Candy to take him back.
“I was sending crazy e-mails,” Collier told the news station in a statement. “I don’t remember half of those things. I was washing down … pills with Stoli [vodka] every morning. Bad idea.”
Candy took out a restraining order against Collier after he reportedly threatened her with a knife in public.
“I would sleep two, three hours a night,” she said. “I would be sitting on the couch watching doors.”
Then one day, Candy got an email saying that Collier had hung himself in an Orlando hotel.
“I just thought, if anyone’s going to know if this is true, his birth mother will know,” Candy said. “I called and Joe’s stepdad answered the phone. … He’s like, ‘Well, you know about the murders, don’t you?’ I was like, ‘I have no idea what you’re talking about.’ And right then, I just could feel like all the blood just, like, drained from me.”
Collier, who had changed his name from Peter Zimmer, served four years in a juvenile facility for murdering his parents and younger brother in Wisconsin when he was just 14 years old, the Waco Tribune-Herald reported.
More recently, Collier pleaded guilty to aggravated stalking in Florida in 2010 after he sent his ex-girlfriend a dead pig and put her personal information and photos on an adult solicitation website, officials said. He served three years in prison for that crime.
In 2015, Collier pleaded guilty to harassing three Florida women, including a former fiancee. McLennan County Court-at-Law Judge Mike Freeman accepted a plea agreement between Collier and prosecutors. Collier was sentenced to 30 days in prison for each of the three Class B misdemeanor counts.
