Albuquerque, New Mexico, police reportedly arrested a man who was accused of attempting to carjack three football players.

Suspect Angelo Martinez, 21, was arrested after he allegedly stopped the group of football players while they were leaving practice at Loma Linda Community Center and asked for a ride, KRQE reported.

The players agreed, but Martinez subsequently pulled a gun and tried to carjack them. One of the players then asked Martinez if he could take his phone with him, and the man agreed. It was then that the players tackled and apprehended him, keeping him until officers arrived.

When authorities arrived at the scene, they discovered that the gun was fake.

“Stupid thug! [It] looks like he got a little of what he deserved. He won’t learn from it. He will do it again and again until someone kills his worthless a**,” one Mad World News reader commented on the site’s Facebook page.

“Instant justice we need to do [this to all criminals] to put the scare back into the thugs. they feel that no one has protection any more,” another wrote.

“How did that work out for him? Not too good I would say. Some lessons are harder to learn. Oh well,” another added.

Some readers applauded the football players for defending themselves.

“What does the law state? You have a right to defend yourself if attacked. Did [these] young men want to fight this loser? No. They had the right according to law to defend themselves. Yes!!!” one KRQE reader commented.

In a similar incident, a Houston, Texas, man was arrested after stealing a mail truck.

The man was arrested after two attempted carjackings — the first of which occurred early during the day that he was arrested. The man attempted to carjack a woman but did not succeed. He later approached Robert Dickerson while the man was sitting in his truck, and Dickerson thought he needed help.

“He pointed the pistol in my face,” he told KPRC. “It was probably 8 or 12 inches from my face.”

Dickerson said that the man demanded he give him his truck, but ultimately walked away after getting frustrated that Dickerson put his hands up in the air to protect himself.

Later, a surveillance camera caught the carjacker stealing a mail truck and driving off.

“He ends up taking his truck and he was tracked here by the postal service,” Police Sgt. Ken Merritt said.

The suspect, whose gun was ultimately revealed to be a pellet gun, was arrested and faced federal charges for stealing a government vehicle.
