Michelle Obama: There’s Only One Choice For President
At her first solo campaign appearance for Democratic Presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, First Lady Michelle Obama blasted Republican candidate Donald Trump without naming him, saying that it is readily apparent that there is only one candidate up to the task of serving as president of the United States.
“Being president isn’t anything like reality TV,” Mrs. Obama said on September 16 at the Clinton rally in Fairfax, Virginia. “It’s not about sending insulting tweets or making fiery speeches, it’s about whether or not the candidate can handle the awesome responsibility of leading this country.”
The first lady also took a jab at Trump’s status as the most well known “birther,” hours after he backed away from questioning where President Barack Obama was born.
“There were those who questioned and continue to question for the past eight years, up through this very day, whether my husband was even born in this country,” Mrs. Obama added. “Well, during his time in office, I think Barack has answered those questions with the example he set by going high when they go low.”
Trump has been highly vocal in his skepticism over President Obama’s birthplace, one issue that helped bring his name to the forefront of Republican politics.
“President Barack Obama was born in the United States, period,” Trump said earlier in the day, according to the New York Times. “Now, we all want to get back to making America strong and great again.”
Mrs. Obama went on to imply in her speech that Trump is “erratic and threatening” and would be the same as president, notes CNN.
“If a candidate traffics in prejudice, fears and lies on the trail; if a candidate has no clear plans to implement their goals; if they disrespect their fellow citizens, including folks who made extraordinary sacrifices for our country; let me tell you, that is who they are,” she added. “That is the kind of president they will be, trust me.”
The first lady said that she was “inspired” to vote for Clinton in the upcoming election and hoped that others were too.
“Let me tell you, Hillary has the resilience that it takes to do this job,” Mrs. Obama continued. “See, because when she gets knocked down, she doesn’t complain or cry foul. No, she gets right back up and she comes back stronger for the people who need her the most.”
