An Ohio State University (OSU) student took to Twitter to share what the military members in her class did upon hearing that another student was carrying out attacks on campus.

On Nov. 28, Abdul Razak Ali Artan, a student at OSU, attacked a group of students on campus shortly after declaring on social media that he was “sick and tired” of seeing fellow Muslims “killed and tortured.”

When news broke on campus, the attack was still ongoing and Artan had not yet been identified. There were initial rumor that the attacker was a shooter, so students hid in their classrooms for safety, barricading the doors with desks and chairs.

Student Molly Clarke posted on Twitter during the attack, sharing what happened in her classroom after she and her classmates heard the news.

Clarke says that, when the news broke, the military members in her classroom all stood up and went straight to the door of the classroom to protect their peers.

“We have quite a few military men in our class, who are actually all standing by the doors, keeping us safe,” Clarke tweeted. “I’m feeling pretty good about that.”

One veteran responded to a CNN report about military members protecting their classmates on Twitter, writing, “It’s what we do. What most people take for as a right is truly made by sacrifice. I love my brothers and sisters. Best family ever.”

An OSU student who witnessed the attack spoke to CNN about what happened.

“He pulled a large knife and started chasing people around, trying to attack them,” student Jacob Bower told CNN. “Luckily there were so many people, he couldn’t focus on one target. I didn’t see anyone get stabbed, but I saw the police officer take down the stabber. He waited ’til everyone was clear, and the stabber clearly wasn’t stopping. (It) took three shots to take him down. (The) stabber had a crazy look in his eyes.”
