Spoiled Woman Wants Worker Fired For ‘Discrimination,’ Manager Has 6 Sharp Words
A Muslim woman and human rights activist says that she faced discrimination while out shopping.
According to Yahoo! Style, Nadia Alawa of Boston, Massachusetts, shared a Facebook post detailing a recent incident in which an employee of White House Black Market in Lynnfield, Massachsetts, discriminated against her.
“Earlier today, I was at the Lynnfield, MA White House Black Market, dressed in my usual Muslim American clothing, which includes a hijab,” Alawa wrote in the post. “As I was looking at clothing, the female store manager, Carisa Bobskill, a woman in her mid-20s, ran over and, with a smug smile, asks me how I am doing. I reply, while looking at the clothes, that I am fine, how are you doing? She then says no, how are you REALLY doing. Her voice is no longer ‘friendly.'”
She continued” “I say I am fine, how are you? She then says, you must be hot, that is why I am asking. I say, I am fine. She says you ARE hot, the store has AC and I am dressed like *this* (looks at herself in shorts and a top), and I am hot, so you must be hot dressed like that. I turn around and look at her, put the hanger back and say I am very fine, thank you.”
Alawa said that she felt humiliated and uncomfortable following the interaction, writing that the clerk “clearly targeted” her, “like a hungry shark out for fodder.” She said that she asked for the employee’s name and contact information to file a complaint.
The mother shared the information of the store in her post and asked Facebook friends and followers to call management and complain if they believe that Bobskill’s behavior was inappropriate.
Alawa concluded, “P.S. My daughter, Laila, just got off the phone with the manager on duty (Mindy), who continued to defend Carisa’s behavior, said that I was wrong for being offended, and that I had a responsibility to ‘explain’ to Carisa why I was feeling the way I did. When Laila said she would post it on social media, Mindy got very agitated, and continued to say that Carisa didn’t have a ‘mean bone in her body.’ This is after 10 minutes of Laila explaining WHY the behavior was wrong.”
After Alawa’s post spread on social media, a spokesperson for White House Black Market issued a statement regarding the incident.
“We have reached out to Ms. Alawa to hear her perspectives directly,” the statement read. “We are committed to providing an environment in all of our stores that is free of harassment and discrimination. We value the diverse backgrounds, experiences, and uniqueness of all of our customers and employees, and we hope to have the opportunity to speak directly with Ms. Alawa.”
