Obama: No Interest In Taking Guns From Law-Abiding People
President Barack Obama held a town hall event in Elkhart, Indiana, June 1. Among the questions he responded to was one from a gun shop owner who objected to Obama’s proposed gun restrictions.
“The notion that I or Hillary or Democrats or whoever you want to choose are hell-bent on taking away folks’ guns is just not true,” Obama told the crowd, reports the Daily Caller.
“And I don’t care how many times the NRA says it,” he continued. “I’m about to leave office. There have been more guns sold since I’ve been president than just about any time in U.S. history. There are enough guns for every man, woman and child in this country.”
In fact, both of Obama’s elections have seen massive spikes in gun sales.
“President Obama has been the best salesman for firearms,” Brian W. Ruttenbur, an analyst with BB&T Capital Markets, told the New York Times. In fact, the paper notes that gun sales have doubled in the decade between 2002 and 2013 – from roughly seven million to 15 million.
The month of Obama’s 2008 election saw gun sales jump from less than 800,000 sales a month to over 1.1 million. Following Obama’s re-election and the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, the January 2013 sale of firearms, which was on track to be around 1.2 million for the month, spiked to over 2 million.
“…[At] no point have I ever proposed confiscating guns from responsible gun owners,” Obama continued at the town hall, reports the Daily Caller. “So it’s just not true.”
“There is a way for us to have commonsense gun laws,” Obama said. “There is a way for us to make sure that lawful, responsible gun owners like yourself are able to use them for sporting, hunting, protecting yourself, but the only way we’re going to do that is if we don’t have a situation in which anything that is proposed is viewed as some tyrannical destruction of the Second Amendment.”
