Plane Lands In Oklahoma City, Passenger Looks Around And Quickly Notices Everyone Is Crying
A man’s incredible Facebook post about a fallen soldier’s return to the United States went viral.
Mike Helms took to Facebook to share his story, explaining that when the plane he was on landed in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the pilot announced that they would need people to stay seated to allow for a fallen soldier’s casket to be removed first. The pilot also requested a moment of silence.
“As we sat there waiting, I decided to look out the window and this is what I saw. A mother and father hysterically crying on their fallen soldiers casket. Standing off to the side were soldiers from her unit saluting their fallen soldier,” he wrote in the post.
“This moment hit me hard for some reason. I couldn’t hold back tears. As I looked around the plane, I was hoping nobody would see my moment of weakness but to my surprise, damn near everyone on the plane was crying. The woman standing next to me was Muslim, I assume because of the hijab she wore. She was in tears and she tried consoling the woman next to her. The plane was filled with people of all races and religions. It was amazing to see everyone on that plane pay tribute to this woman and her family.”
Helms said that he felt the unity and shared emotion in that moment was proof that it was the media who divided people in the country.
“ I saw no division on that plane last night. I saw Americans paying respect to their countryman. A woman who put her life on the line for me, and you, and your freedoms,” he wrote.
“She died like many before her to give you the right to spit in her face while taking a knee during our national anthem or burning our flag in the street.”
Many readers expressed emotion over the story, and applauded Helms’ message of unity and shared compassion and respect for those who fight for the country.
“My thanks to all the caring people on that flight. As a retired Marine, I have seen it all, good, bad and ugly. Unfortunately I have been the escorts of a fallen Marine. Sometimes the airport is understanding, but there are those who truly do not understand sacrifice,” one Mad World News reader commented on the site’s Facebook page.
“My heart goes out to this family. You’re in my thoughts and prayers. And thank you to all the men and women that do this every day and it seems to go unnoticed by so many people who take things far granted so much and don’t even appreciate the freedoms we do still have left in this country because of the men and women like right here. Thank you and God bless!!!!!!!” another added.
