Trump’s Umbrella Moment at Air Force One Goes Viral
A brief moment on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews became an unexpected viral sensation in October 2018 after President Donald Trump appeared to struggle with an umbrella while boarding Air Force One.
The incident occurred on October 27 as Trump prepared to depart for a rally in Indianapolis. Rain was falling steadily, and Trump carried an open umbrella as he climbed the stairs to the aircraft.
When he reached the top of the staircase and the doorway of Air Force One, Trump paused. Rather than closing the umbrella and stepping inside, he appeared momentarily uncertain about what to do with it. After a brief hesitation, he simply released the open umbrella at the threshold and walked into the plane.
The abandoned umbrella rattled around at the top of the stairs before a Secret Service agent retrieved it.
Video of the moment spread rapidly across social media and cable news. Late-night talk show hosts seized on the footage, and the clip generated millions of views across platforms within hours.
Critics used the moment to mock the president, while his supporters dismissed it as a trivial distraction — particularly given the gravity of the day’s events. The departure came on the same day as the mass shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where 11 people were killed in what became the deadliest attack on a Jewish community in American history.
The umbrella incident was not the last time Trump’s handling of the devices would draw attention. Similar moments were captured on camera in subsequent years, including footage of Trump fumbling with umbrellas while boarding Air Force One on multiple occasions.
The episode became one of many small viral moments that defined the Trump presidency on social media — the kind of brief, easily shareable clip that generated outsized attention and debate relative to its actual significance.
